I can't think of a title

This is my 80th post. I have had this blog for less than 2 months and I have 80 posts all ready, I had my journal for maybe a year and I wrote in it about 10 times or so. So I guess this blog is more interesting to me than a journal, and I am writing here more than I thought I would. I thought at first, that when the novelty wore off I wouldn't post here any more but it didn't turn out that way. I like this blog because I get comments, I can post pictures and it is easer to write. My mom says she cant believe its this late, so I guess I'll go to bed. This isn't the most interesting post, but oh well.

My kind of poetry

I use vers libre when I write poetry. It doesn't really rhyme and sometimes it doesn't make sense, but if you study my poetry really, really hard you will figure out what I mean. And sometimes you don't have to study it at all, the meaning is quite clear. But don't ask me what I mean because sometimes I don't even know, until I am done and have read it over and over. I write the first thing that comes to mind, and later I figure out why I used that particular word. Sometimes I start out knowing exactly what I want portrayed, but other times, like I said, I have no carefully thought out plan and everything sorta falls into place like a puzzle. Also my poems rarely have any timing; you have to make up your own. That being said, here is my newest poem, called Gravel:

Gravel

Gravel is hard, like shiny slivers or shards
Of glass. Or cat claws when the feline is scared
cause' the bag is stuck to its fur with static.
You tell somebody they are stupid, thats like
Gravel, it hurts, then everything has to be fixed
Since you just bruised and cut up and broke.
Gravel is rough so when you fall and hurt
It stings to the bones, like you had stones
Thrown at you. Gravel is loose or hard
You may become callouses and dark
Or maybe you will loosen up and let it slide
Pretend you don't care, but deep down inside
That gravel is rubbing you raw and tearing you up
Like vultures were ripping away every last part
After awhile, maybe, it could perhaps happen
Like oysters with a piece of grit or gravel
You slide out of your shell you aren't so bitter or tart
You find forgiveness and peace deep down
In you heart. And there you go, you found the pearl
You want to go tell this whole massive world
You found the One who could give you life
And He did. Forget all the hurt and the pain of the past
And the gravel thrown at you, because you have
Salvation and peace from Him. And that will last.

Spider biscuits

Josiah, Elijah, Lizzie, Abby and Ben built a snow fort today in the front yard. We are hoping, since it is supposed to freeze tonight, that the walls will harden up and then we will carve a tunnel for a door. I took Snickers and Puppy for a walk on the ATV trail, that was interesting. Puppy "walks" really fast while Snickers would rather dawdle and smell the mouse holes. So I have Puppy yanking my arm off while Snickers is lagging behind, I was pulled in two different directions. It was good to see the Maoks house came up and we could turn around and go home. I am listening to Adventures in Odyssey, so it is taking me awhile to write. So as I sit here, I will type whatever comes to mind, this could be interesting.

Timmy may be coming home either tomorrow or Thursday, that will be nice. I have been looking through all the pictures I drew and painted. Some of them are, well interesting and some I threw away. But I kept most of them and later on I may post a few, I am sure they will be better than my poems. I least I hope. I like to draw spiky and curvy things, like borders or something. Its strange, I could fill a whole page with them and then color it in all rainbow and then Sarah and Chelsae tell me it look cool. I think it looks like a word somewhere in between normal, insane and bored.

I cleaned out the fridge for supper tonight and found fuzzy pancakes form at least a month ago, slimy oatmeal, indescribable goo that smelled bad, slimy salad, gravy/deerish looking grainy stuff with red saucy stuff and two pieces of hard as rock bread. There was turkey left, so I put it in the oven to heat up, and the smoke alarm went of. I didn't know turkey burned so fast, so I just figured somebody was using the toaster. When I looked in the oven later I found hard lumps of biscuits from last night supper.

There is a spider climbing around the monitor, and it is bugging me. It sorta crawls around, then drops, then climbs back up and hangs there before crawling around again. I already took it down but it crawled back up. That reminds me, I found worms in the fridge to.

I watched a video called "my name is lisa" on youtube. It was kinda sad, but not really, I don't know. Lisa's mom has alzheimer's disease and she cant remember things. Like putting laundry on the car, trying to pay for pizza with a photo and forgetting who her daughter is, and then told her to leave.



Josiah wants to use the computer now, he says I have been on a long time. I personally disagree but time flies. I think I'll stop now, staring at the monitor for so long is turning my brain to mush and I cant think straight. I am actually posting this at 10:04, it took that long to write it.

Goodnight people

Mom came back tonight, while dad stays with Timmy. Timmy is a lot better, and is very restless. He tries to take out all the wires and wants to get down. He has also developed a fear of stethoscopes, which is a little funny but not much. If he sees any body coming with one he will start screaming. John is home also, he came home this afternoon. He has two different antibiotics to take, and he doesn't want to. Josiah and I tried to get him to take the pink stuff, but he started screaming and clamped his teeth. What we managed to get in his mouth, he basically spit it out. The other medicine gets mixed with his milk, so he tasted his milk and said he didn't want it, he wanted clean milk. He has a headache and the lights make his eyes hurt, so he starts crying.

Dad bought John a Bob the Builder DVD. Sadly, I watched it. I didn't know I could get that bored, and I even laughed at Spud hiding Farmer Pickles hay bales. Sigh. What is my poor brain coming to?

The snow is melting and it is raining. The good thing is that the snow is just right for firm, cold snowballs. Hehehehe, Elijah you had better watch out. I haven't really been outside today and I don't know how much I will sleep tonight. I am tired, but not tired.

They will try to get pictures of Timmy tomorrow, so y'all can get to see what he looks like with his pink striped PJ's and wires. I miss Timmy, and I wish John would laugh again with out coughing.

Timmy and John

Today has been an interesting day. I know just about everybody who reads this blog already knows why today was interesting, but I want to write it anyways.

My parents took Timmy to the clinic where they were told that he had bronchiolitis and they should take him to the hospital, so Timmy went to Hotel Dieu Saturday morning. Dad told me that when the got there, the nurses ran to acute right away because he was having trouble breathing. Timmy stayed over night in the pediatric and sometime around 8am (or so) he was taken by helicopter to CHEO in Ottawa. Sometime during the night (I guess) Timmy had gotten worse and he had to have the oxygen mask or else he was gasping for breath. So that is were my mom and Timmy are now, dad says Timmy may be there for a few days or until he can breath without oxygen.

Sunday, John seemed to have gotten worse and dad was expecting to have to take him to the hospital when he got done settling in my mom. John was wheezing, and after lunch he told me that he was having trouble breathing. So as soon as dad got home, he and I took John to Hotel Dieu. When we got there they sent us to acute and gave John a vaporizing mask to help break up the mucus so that he could breath better. John seemed quite comfortable and fell asleep:) After that they gave him some medicine (in the shape of a soft pill) with some ice cream. At first he didn't want to eat it, but the nurse/doctor promised him a popsicle if he did. Then they took him to ex-ray his chest/lungs; the doctor said he had some stuff in the lungs and it would be wise to stay overnight in case he got worse like Timmy. It was originally planned that I would stay with John, but since I am not 18 yet, I wouldn't be able to sign any papers if John needed to have further treatment or whatever. So John is overnight with my dad and has the IV going.

So we arn't sure yet what they have, we were told it could be bronchiolitis (or bronchitis), a virus or maybe something that they picked up from Josiah when he had pneumonia.

I think thats it, if I miss any thing I will write later, now I am so tired I may fall asleep right here.

Isaiah 40

So now Timmy is in the hospital; he has bronchiolitis. "Bronchiolitis is a common illness of the respiratory tract caused by an infection that affects the tiny airways, called the bronchioles, that lead to the lungs. As these airways become inflamed, they swell and fill with mucus, making breathing difficult." I love how that last sentence sounded so technical, to bad I didn't write it. John was not as bad this morning, but he seems to have gotten worse. Dad says we will take him in Monday. Its a little scary listening to your little brother wheezing and coughing all day; John says to my dad "I will be better tomorrow, you have to pray for me daddy".

Chelsea slept over last night and that is why I didn't post to much. We watched National Treasure and then went to bed. I am so tired. I played monopoly with Chelsea for four hours before we called it a tie. I owned half the board, and she owned the other half. I got to go to jail five or six times, then I finally got past that spot and landed on community chest and got the "go to jail, go directly to jail, do not past go do not collect $200". So I went back to jail, rolled three times, paid to get out and landed on chance. I picked up a card and it was, yeah you guessed it. Back to jail.

I really like Isaiah 40, here is the last verses.

21. Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?

22. It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

23. That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.

Something about the "Haven't you known? Didn't you here? Hasn't it been told to you since the beginning? Haven't you understood from the foundations of the earth?" sticks in my mind. I don't know why.

ho hum

I just love wet packing snow, its perfect for snow balls and snow forts. I started building a fort with Chelsea, but she got cold and I had to go in and help clean. I threw several snowballs at Elijah (I hit him) and I started to throw one at Jeff, but thought better. He was in the house and snowballs and houses don't mix.

I have started this sentence three times now, and I just don't know what to write. Sometimes I wonder why I started a blog, but I only wonder that when I can't think. When I can think of stuff I am glad I have a blog, or else my head would bust. I just have to write some days. The song "My eyes are dry" ( I wrote about that before) has been going through my head a lot today. My eyes are dry, my faith is old, my heart is hard and my prayers cold. I don't know if the words are just catchy or if thats true. I haven't cried over sin any time recently; is my heart hard and is my faith growing old? I am saddened to realize that I am really not that concerned about lost souls and sin as I use to be, and sometime I find church and everything tiring. But what can be done for an old heart like mine? Soften it up with oil and wine, the oil is you, your spirit of love please wash me anew with the wine of your blood.

I think I have been looking at the world to much, and wishing I could by like them and still be a Christian. I can't serve two masters, and I don't want to. I am so used to the music, movies and swearing that it doesn't bother me any more, and I have begun to think that if its ok for them, its ok for me; and who can stay whole hearted for Christ when they let in things of the world? I need to remember that if He isn't pleased with it, I shouldn't do it.

Dad wants me to go to bed, so I guess I will do that.

Johnny's mother had four children. The first was April, the second was May, and the third was June. What was the name of her fourth child?

Dolphin

Today I woke up to "Get up, quick! look out the window, hurry, hurry! It'll melt soon, get up! Get up!" Of course Lizzie and Abby were excited, but since this is my 15-16 winter I could have slept more. So I got up and let the dogs out to play, since everybody knows that dogs love snow. They freaked at first; it was like "Whats this?! It is cold under my paws, leave me alone I am going back to my blanket" Then Puppy realized that this was the same white stuff she loved last year, and she went running. She managed to get Snickers excited too, but at first if dogs could roll their eyes he would have been doing that.

I vacuumed and washed my bedroom floor today. I may have not done that, but I decided that Puppy needed a bath. I told my mom that she wouldn't pee on the floor at all, and I would keep her in my room until she had dried and nobody would know Puppy was in the house. You know the very first thing she did when she got inside? And after I managed to get her washed (the water was black by the way, when I was done) what did she do three times when I put her in my room? Puppy is no longer a inside dog, she is big enough that if she jumps up, her paws are on my bed and thats the top bunk. Then she started eating cat food and rummaging through the trash can and attacking the broom and jumping on Abby's bed and chewing on an old baking soda container and drinking fish tank water and chewing Lizzie's coat and annoying me. All at the same time.

It's nice to not have to do school at all this week. I started a blue-jean rug and put glue on the back of a dolphin puzzle so that I could hang it on the wall. I listened to Sleepy Time Lullabys (the one with good night Emily) and some of the songs on that tape are really nice, I was pleasantly surprised.

After prayer meeting tonight I had a nice snowball fight (a fight to hit Joseph, since he is so good at dodging) with Elijah and Joseph. John hit me to, and Timmy tried but he needs to work on aim but at least he tried. I am going to practice hitting targets so I can better my aim, I will start with stationary objects, such as a telephone pole or a person standing still and then go to moving objects like silly seagulls and fleeing brothers. Hopefully the kids will not have to go to school tomorrow, and we can all play together.

Pictionary

I am in the process of cleaning my room today, but I needed a break. It is very easy to clean without my younger sisters in there because they like to save things from the garbage. I understand that they have trash (in my eyes) that they would call "treasure", that maybe they could keep, but they also have little snippets of paper, tin cans, toilet paper tubes, moldy dolls that look like they have gray chicken pox, short pieces of hairy yarn (and I mean real hair, not a kind of yarn), broken toys that don't work any more and mega blocks. I just now looked down at the key board to see what kept sticking to my wrist, and I found a piece of gum.

Josiah got a trial version of Sim City 2000, and its pretty cheap. It's really pixeled looking and well, I like the newer version better. Whats funny though is that after 25 minutes disaster start hitting your town. Ben had a volcano come out of nowhere in the middle of the city!

I wish I got more important emails than just boring newsletter from people I don't know, hallmark adds and other such nonsense. Every once and a while I get emails from my grandparents, my mother or Heather but not very often. I do have more emails that my younger siblings, so I guess I could be glad about that. I have 244 spam emails in my horseluver227 account; I just decided to stop deleting them.

It has been raining today so I didn't do much, except my puzzles. I got 11 brand new puzzles (all one set) from Value Village yesterday, and I have one done and two in progress. I was working on the one with my mom and the other in my room. The one my mom is doing, I wont tell her what it is, I told her she has to put the puzzle together to find out.

I was talking about moldy dolls to my mom, as she was writing a grocery list. Josiah then told me about some moldy dog treats he had thrown out, and mother, (who was listening to the conversation) for some reason almost wrote "ape food" on the list. She then started laughing and declared that she was going bananas. She was laughing so hard she was crying and couldn't see right so she wrote blueberries wrong.

We played pictionary, all together, and that was hilarious. The pictures people draw are so funny, and its amazing they were actually guessed. Dad had to draw Charles Lindbergh, Josiah guessed something like "an island sinking with palm trees and mountains and a sun and the man is standing there watching."

Dickies

I went to Value Village today and bought some clothes. Elijah was getting shoes, and for some reason he didn't like my suggestions. Come on, whats wrong with bright blue shoes with strange Oriental like writing on them? They were boys shoes!

I was doing an experiment for biology toady that required refrigeration for a few hours. And guess what?! Timmy and John were eating it! I quickly took them out of the fridge and told then that they should never eat my experiments because you never know whats in them. I may have put H2SO4 in it for all you know. They just laughed and ran away. Arrrg!

Victor's dog came back today, and he really bugged Snickers. Snicker's seems to think he owns Puppy and must protect her from any intruder. That is good in a way, but he has nipped my arm on several occasions when I started to reprimand Puppy for some wrong doing. One funny thing is that Snickers is fixed, but not in his mind. So, yeah, you know what that means. But those two dogs get along so well and its good we have two dogs because they keep each other company when we are busy. They also keep each other warm when it is cold. But anyways, back to the original subject. This dog comes over here AGAIN and we decided we are not going to take him back. Victor have to come get him if he wants his dog, otherwise we will send him to the pound. And it just so happened that Victor came by today and saw his dog he told us that he is to old to control the dog and that after his son got home from work he would come and get him (the dog). He did come and get the dog later and Josiah told him that we almost took him to the pound. He told us that a few years ago he had to pay $100 to get the dog out of the pound; you think he would have learned to keep his dog tied up by now.

Chelsea has tonsillitis, and when I went over to see her today she looked tired. She said her neck was sore and her throat hurt, and I could see that her face was reddish and also her voice sounded funny. She has to take little red pills every day, and she told me that if I got it, it wasn't so bad. I would just get to take pills, and I would get to rest. Simple.

Timmy knows way to much about the computer. He knows where the esc. key is, the power button, enter and he knows how to put CDs in the drive. He also knows that if you press random buttons on the keyboard, things happen that do not please whoever is using the computer. He has deleted my posts before just as I was about too post them and my emails. John is just as bad, he has "accidentally" turned of the computer when I refused to give him a cookie, and messed up my race on Lego racers when I was winning, for once. They have tried my patience so many times and I hope I don't yell at them to often. They know how far to go until I can't take it any more and take them to mother or place them on a chair, and they will go that far and then run away, laughing. I wonder if sometime in the future I will have a very trying child to deal with and the Lord is using my brothers to prepare me.

Bears and nothing

These two bears are Elijah and Joseph when they are acting like, um, like boys, I guess. Now I will sit here for a while until I think of something to write.

I wish somebody would invent a fast board game. One where you don't wait ten minutes until your turn, and the game doesn't last for hours. I cant sit for so long drumming my hands on the table or tossing the kitty treats container from one hand to the next until Oh, finally! its my turn. I like Aggravation and that froggy game we have. Those games are fun, fast and require skill on when to toss the fly to the froggy or how to move your marbles to cause the most aggravation to your fellow players. I like cards games like Go Fish, Old maid, Skipboo, Dutch Blitz and Spit. When you get bored of those games you just play 20 (or 30 or 40) card pickup. Or like some of us at snow camp did once, we put the cards on the ceiling fan, turned the fan on, and then watched to see how far the cards flew and could we catch them before they hit the floor.

This is such a short post but my dad wishes me to hit the sack now. Tomorrow I am going to try and find a funny Wendy's commercial (if there are any) to post.

This is for today

I clean the church every Saturday, and this Saturday we were out of toilet cleaner. So Dad bought some, and when he gave it to me, the bottle felt loaded. The same feeling when you just shook a can of root beer and the can is all hard. So I was standing next to the boys bathroom door as I opened it, and it started bubbling over and sprayed on the door. I ran it to the sink before it got all over everywhere, but now there are strange marks on the door.

I went over to Chelsae's for a bit this afternoon and ate homemade oatmeal cookies with milk. That was good. Her family went to the Christmas parade tonight, and they wont be back until around 8. It has got to be so cold right now out there, especially if you are just standing around and not moving much. I hope it snows.

John washed my putty eraser so now I can chew on it again without worrying about what it has picked up. It's like chewing on a substance in between plasti-tac and gum, and it taste like art. Like a pencil and some paint mixed together. For some reason I like it, must be because I am not a normal sane person.

Puppy and Snickers tore their monkey into pieces this afternoon. You can see stuffing and brown fur strewn across the yard were they play. In Food Basics today, I saw a dog bone with little rubber spikes on it. It was called an aqua bone because you put water in it and as the dog chewed, the water would come out through little holes and clean the dogs teeth. Puppy could really benefit from having her teeth brushed. One sniff of here killer breath could knock out any fox that comes venturing into our yard.

Timmy just came over here with a two headed Lego man and declared that it was me. Brothers! He loves to play with Lego and he actually builds things. John like to play with Lego to and builds me lots of cars.

Bangladesh was hit by a cyclone/tornado again. An estimated 2.7 million people were affected and 773,000 houses were damaged. Roughly 250,000 head of cattle and poultry perished, and crops were destroyed on nearly 313 square kilometers of land. It's a pretty poor country (they just got poorer) and they seem to be prone to that sort of natural disaster.

Puppy is waiting on the porch for me, and she is hungry. Gotta go feed Her Majesty.

This is for yesterday

I couldn't think of any thing to write yesterday until I went to bed, then it was to late. I am going to make a list of everything I don't like.

  1. Beets in any size, shape or form
  2. People scratching the chalk bored with their fingernails
  3. Little boys who use razors to shave their arms
  4. Babies running blocks up my arm (like a "train"), it gives me shivers
  5. Puppy chasing cats and generally being a disobedient dog
  6. salt and vinegar potato chips
  7. Coffee and capuchinos (however you spell that)
  8. DVDs that skip
  9. Extremely hot and muggy weather
  10. The cat clicking the button on the mouse and stepping on the keyboard

Here are things I do like.

  1. The cat chewing my biology paper
  2. Lemon meringue pie
  3. My Puppy when she is good
  4. Warm windy nights
  5. A fleece blanket
  6. Climbing trees
  7. Watching a rose bud open
  8. Watching air planes fly over head
  9. Seeing horses run
  10. Standing outside while it snow
  11. Warm, cuddly little brothers
  12. Painting
Of course I like many more things and dislike many more things, but I couldn't write then all down.

DVDs that I want to watch

Well, I am finally posting. Josiah got his three DVDs today and we have been watching them. The three he got are Pilgrims Progress, Sheffy and God's Outlaw (which is about William Tyndale). The DVDs that I want to get next are End of the Spear and The cross and the switchblade. I couldn't find anything about The cross and the switchblade on pluggedin but I did find stuff about End of the Spear. I read five chapters in my book about Benedict Arnold. He finally turned traitor and he book gets more interesting, thats what I have been waiting for since I started reading it. Now I just have to answer some questions about what I read and I'll be good. School is pretty interesting. It's just this blog is tempting so I don't always stick to it thats why the rule that I wasn't allowed to be on the internet until I had done some work from every subject was installed.

I am not really tired, but dad says it is time for me to go to bed. He says I need my "ugly" sleep. . .

Guess what? there isn't a title.

I would have written earlier but I was watching videos on youtube. I like the Britain's got talent show, and I like watching it. I mentioned that before.

I have been reading in history about all the delegates making the constitution. The author writes about how the summer that year was hot and since they had all the windows closed in the building they were meeting in, it must have been stifling. She says that since people believed then that baths were unhealthy, that the building must have stank. Can you imagine a bunch of sweaty, dirty men who were probably wearing wool suits meeting together in a closed room where conversations were heated? That must have stank! There was a note to the side mentioning something about a man putting up a shower in his backyard and then urging his wife to try it. The wife says that she faired well, considering that she hadn't gotten completely wet in 28 years. I have to memorize this for my history, even though I will most likely forget it soon afterwards. It's the preamble to the constitution

Biology is getting a little bit confusing, but I find that if I read slowly and read the same page several times than I get it. Today I was learning about osmosis and balanced chemical equations. This questioned seemed hard, but after dad explained it I got it, and then I felt silly because it was rather easy. Here is the equation:

Here is the question: ___ molecule of C18H26O16 reacts with _____ molecules of H2O to make _____ molecules of C6H12O6.

I asked mom what kind of job she wouldn't mind me having. I DO NOT want to work at a pet store, thats just lame. A bakery is ok a guess, but I wouldn't like it. And a daycare wouldn't work because I find it hard to control myself when children aren't being disciplined properly. "He can't help it, she has the mind of a 3 year old, it's ok, they are just expressing themselves, don't worry we will give him his medication soon and then he will calm down".

I like goats, so I have until spring to research them and everything and then mom says she will help set me up. I have to figure out what people around here like about goats. Is it the wool, meat, cheese or milk? or maybe people want to buy actual, live goats. Of course we would have to build a barn of sorts, and fencing, and food and vet care and ca-ching,ca-ching! And then if everything works, I will start making profit. And then I can take a first responder course and drivers license and flight lessons and a year or two in Bible school, and yeah I think I am counting chickens before they hatch. Proverbs 3:5-6 come to mind. It's just I want to go to Bangladesh as soon as possible and I'm excited, and I can't wait to see what paths God will lead me down, and to see how He will work everything out if it's His will.

I have to stop now, dad didn't want me up until 11:00. It says I posted at 10:18, but it really is 10:56

Today was Abigail's birthday, she is now nine. Lets see, she got a piggy bank with a key from Elijah, a remote control ATV and a flashlight from Nate, some sewing stuff (like pins, cloth, ribbon, batting and scissors) from mom, Bob the Builder blocks from John and Timmy (I think the boys had themselves in mind when they picked that out), some pencils, highlighters, eraser and paper pad from Ben, a CD player with headphones from Dad, a froggy webkinz from Chelsae, two dollars and a card from Ethan and I made her cake.

Timmy just came over here holding Gwandle around the neck, singing, "Lanle, Lanle, Lanle, Lanle"

So Abby Lizzie and I went with Mom to the Hotel Dieu Hospital. We spent enough time in the waiting room before mom was called for me to read two nature friends, one readers digest and one magazine that I don't remember the name. After mom left I spent time staring at the wall trying to read the CPR procedures that were posted there. Then I read a brochure about how to stop smoking and a magazine on how to be a better farmer. Then I just sat and stretched and stared at nothing. All this time Abby and Lizzie were alternating between sitting on the chairs, playing with a toy that I don't know the name of and eating those big rocket like candies. After we were called we got to go see the baby, this time I was actually able to distinguish his features and he looked like a baby, not a lump of blob. I could see his lags and arms moving around, and see his spine and the black circles that were his eyes and little feet. It was pretty cool, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made and that my soul knoweth right well" And if you noticed, the baby is a boy.

Now, I need to go finish playing a Monopoly game, I am winning. hehehehe

At 10:07 I lost, and I don't want to play Monopoly for several more years. You know the last time I won? That was when I still lived in New York.

The story of the fly

When I went up to the ponds today with Puppy I saw a big turtle. It's shell was about the size of a dinner plate, making it the biggest live turtle I've ever seen. I tried to catch it, but it swam farther away and I didn't want to wading up to my waist, considering the fact that the pond is covered with ice and the water is freezing. That was a long sentence. I got some aquatic weeds, rocks and a piece of bog wood for my fish tank. It looks strange now, like a mix between old and new. I have plastic plants and bright blue, red and yellow rocks mixed with natural plants and rocks so it looks lopsided. I got a guppy from Ben and it spend most of its time hiding in the flowerpots at the bottom of the tank. I guess it is scared it will get eaten by its larger fish mates or at least nibbled on.

There is a ladybug crawling on the desk. I put my finger in front of it and it stops moving, when I remove my finger it starts going again. It really went this time, I just orbited it into space with a satisfying crunch. If I had bat ears I might have been able to hear it scream. There is an unsuspecting fly crawling on the desk now. It doesn't know that a ladybug perished here just mere seconds ago. Oh well, ignorance is no excuse, smack! It's guts are falling out as it franticly tries to crawl to safety. Oh no! A mammoth log (a pencil) is pinning it to the desk, it flails it's legs in a last attempt to escape this terrible judgment. As it's would be killer uploaded pictures of the horrendous crime it escaped! But alas, one stab from the pencil point has ended everything.

Timmy loves Gwandle too much. He picks her up by the neck and carries her around. And John will stuff her into drawers and laundry baskets and then stand there going "hehehehehe" while looking at me. Then he will proudly exclaim "Rarah! Rarah!, Wook, I put the kitty in the waunkry bakit." or " The kitty ih in the woor, Iwnt that funny? hahahaha" Then I glare at him and tell him to take the poor kitty out and leave it alone. He thinks it is so funny and walks off chortling to himself.

I was reading about Nathan Hale today in history. The drawing of his hanging looked a bit romanticized and for some reason there was a woman holding up a baby at Nathan, like what you would see in paintings of Moses and the snake. You know, where the snakes are bitting the Israelites and they all have to look at the bronze serpent to live. Its funny seeing pictures if fat, rolly-polly people, when they were most likely skinny, hard working people.

People are playing Monopoly again. It sounds like Elijah is loosing and Ben is winning, while Josiah is in between. Elijah and Ben get hyper at night, especially when playing games. Here is one excerpt:

Bits of this and that

Today is Saturday. Did you know that Saturday was named to honor Saturn? I guess thats why the Quakers would have said "It's the seventh day of the week". I had clam chowder for supper and Gwandle just licked clean my bowl and spoon, now she is sitting here like a little queen cleaning herself. Dad got a webcam! I cant wait for Aunt Sharon to get on IM so I can use it, she has one on her laptop and wanted to use it the last time I was talking to her. I had to get Chelsae's bike out of the garage for her because it was right next to the deer. She doesn't like to see the inside of it since its all bloody and icky looking. Chelsea went inside to close the garage door, and as I was standing under the door I said to Ethan that wouldn't it be funny if the door started closing right then. Just as I got done talking the door started closing and it kinda startled me. She helped me clean the church today and Dad bought us timbits. Chelsea doesn't like going into the boys bathroom for some reason, she says it smells, so I had to sweep and mop in there. Mom is cleaning and defrosting the big freezer and she found lots of UFOs-Unidentified Frozen Objects-that I threw away. There was some frozen herbs from years ago and blocks of something that had bits of something in them, I had no clue what. She also found a package of black licorice (which is the best), and after we figure out where they came from, I will have some. John has had an off and on earache for a while. Right now he is whimpering and moaning at the table as he tries to eat his supper. For supper they had sausage (eww), peas (ok) and meatballs from Mrs. Linnett that were unearthed from the freezer. I haven't tasted them, so I don't know what they taste like. Loebs has a lot of stuff on sale or "3 for $3.99". We bought some KD for lunch tomorrow and it was cheaper than getting the generic brand. Dad bought a fish tank to replace my cracked one, it puzzles me how that plexiglass tank cracked anyways. Its not on an uneven surface and I don't pick it up a lot (it's 5 lbs of sloshing water) so how did it crack? As soon as I switch my fish around Dad will figure out where the crack is, and then I'll give that tank to Ben. I never use the light on it and he likes lights. He likes the green algae that grows because of the florescent rays. I like natural light for my fish, and I think it looks better. Ben and I differ a lot on fish care, I like it this way, he likes it the opposite way and yeah, we argued a lot. We finally decided that I would do my fish my way and he do his fish his way and we would see who's fish were healthier. It's funny, there really isn't a difference in our fish's lives, its just that Ben follows the book and I experiment, and our fish turned out the same. I have a white goldfish. When I got it it looked all rusty and as it grew the skin started turning gray, than white. So I have two gold goldfish and one white goldfish. I used to have an algae eater and two silver dollars, but those evil goldfish ate the algae eater and the heater cooked the silver dollars. Emily was somewhat surprised that the goldfish would do that, and thought it was ridicules. It was sad because she had given me the fish after I had told her they would be fine and would prosper in a friendly and warm society. I think this post will be long enough, so here is a picture of a hamster playing a video game. But first, here is a picture I don't get. It says " oh hay I has bad newz" I dunno, is it an ex-ray or something?

Music

Ok, so I am going to share with everyone some really icky (I'll be honest, the first word that came to my mind was the c-word) people/bands that I don't like. I actually don't like any of the secular (hmmm, I think thats the word) music out there, but these guys and girls really bug me. Here are their names: Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, Shakira, Black Eyed Peas, Stacy "Furgie" Ferguson, and 50 Cent.

Some of you may remember SOS, by Rihanna and you already know what I think of her voice. I spelled her name wrong on one of my last posts. Now Snoop Dogg just creeps me out. They way they start out a lot of their songs with a long, drawn out, "Snooooooooooooooooooooop Dawgg!" And then they start singing in a quiet revengeful sort of way, like hearing a voice say very controlled and quietly in pitch black, "I am going to get you". I don't like Shakira 'cause she is a slut and seems to like it. I have never listened to her and I don't plan to, but I have seen the case on one of Chelsae's CDs, and she sports the "Eve look". The Black Eyed Peas are just weird, here is a bit of their son "lets get retarded. I, personally think they are retarded. hehehe

Weird isn't it. Even their names are strange, there is will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo and then Furgie is also part of the BEP; she is the female singer in the group. She is pretty much like Shakira to me. And the last is 50 cent, it's rap and I hate rap and thats all I am gonna say.

I don't really want to go into detail about who they actually are, and I wish I had never heard any of their songs at all. It's a real big hindrance in church or when I try to pray and then suddenly "Furgalicous, defanicious. . ." goes sailing through my mind., or "SOS, please someone help me, its not healthy for me to remember this song. . ." It's terrible. I wish I could think of some verses from the Bible to help, but my mind is blank. My apologies to anyone who has those songs stuck in your head. But this blog is sorta like my "sounding board", I am not going to get a response from this actual blog, but I can write it all down and think "there, now it's out".

What to write about, that is the question. I ate a banana today, isn't that so exciting? I finally finished reading Come, fill the cup by Lee Bryant. The quote starting chapter four basically describes her life before she was saved:

Almost everybody is playing Monopoly; Josiah made a new game out of it today so they are trying it out. He (Josiah) says it will be more interesting, there are four jobs to do, not one. There is a revenue agent, banker( which includes being a real estate agent), mortgage and loan adviser and the shares consultant. It sounded complex, but it is promised to be interesting, I of course am not playing it unless it proves to be faster that normal.

Nate bought some new headphones, so he wants me to go try them out, I guess. Besides I cant think of anything to write.

Why does there have to be a title?

I have had 703 visitors since starting this blog. I remember just yesterday when I had only 605, a hundred visitors in one day. But a lot of the visitors were not unique, so I didn't get very many NEW visitors.

I went out with Ben to take care of the dogs and I realized that it is cold. Thankfully the dogs were quick doing there "business" tonight, I'm not sure how much Ben would have lasted. Since I am not a normal sane person, I will tell you that it is funny to see the ste -- oh never mind, it's too gross. But you are curious now aren't you? Don't you want to know what I was about to write? Wouldn't you like it so much if I finished my sentence?

We were watching a 30,000 millisecond long thing about surviving on a 1812 battleship, hosted by Roger Daltry, he is a Brit, and had a funny accent and used the word bloody a lot. In my opinion he said way to many swear words, words that my younger siblings probably had never heard so they didn't know they were bad. We will see if they start saying them one of these days.

Chelsea came over here right after getting of the bus. She was listening to her mp3 player and had it turned up loud, loud enough for us to hear the words. First, I don't know how she can listen to the stuff, and second, why does Reanna sing so weird? Those of you who have never heard her sing probably don't know what I mean, but her voice sounds like a cros between a opera singer ( maybe a little like Pavarotti singing Ave Maria) and a chicken being run over by a freight train. You may be able to tell by that last statement that I don't like chickens or opera one little bit. The only person I like to listen to that sings opera is that cell phone sales man, Paul Potts. It is nice that he won the Britain's got talent variety show.

My dad wants me to got to bed now.

Cebu

I just love playing hockey. I would like it even better if a certain boy didn't influence his brother into picking me and Dallas so that we would be on the same team. I am interested to know if Dallas would actually do all those things he has threatened to do. Would he actually hook and jump check me?

This is the greatest veggietails video ever. I love it!



Elijah, Ethan, the twins, Chelsea and Sarah finished putting the fence in while I made supper. The only problem with it is that the cats are not effected. So if one of the dogs happens to see a cat that needs chased, they chase it. Sooner or later Puppy will learn that if she can endure getting shocked for .25 of a minute, then they are free to go out of our yard. Guess I'll have to do some more training. They also put horse manure on the garden which Puppy loved. Can you imagine eating the stuff!? She likes it even better in the summer when its full of white, squirmy maggots! Ewwww! Ewwww! Ewwww!

Our neighbor shot a 8-point buck today. I can't wait to see the head mounted, it will look so cool. I wont get to see it before they cut it up, but at least I'll get to see the head. I don't like killing animals (except bugs like ladybugs) but I wonder what it felt like to shoot a big buck like that? Did it feel satisfying, or "oh wow, I got it"? That sounded weird when I read over what i wrote just now.

I finally am posting this post! YES! I started at 2:25 and lots has happened since then. Timmy turned the computer off and I had to make supper and then I accidentally deleted the post. I couldn't believe I did that and I said, to no one in particular, I don't wanna do this anymore. Frustrating.

Puppy and Gwandle

I am almost done with Puppy's fence. The wire is not all the way in the ground yet, but it's connected. I accidentally shocked myself and it reminded me of the electric fence at the Hodgin's house. Poor Puppy was shocked so much she was breathing funny!

My pets eat strange food, Puppy will eat anything DDD and Gwandle loves that sweet stuff made out of puffs. She also likes chicken noddles (not the actual broth just the noodles) and has been known to eat napkins that are soaked with milk or tomato soup. Right now Puppy is chewing on a washcloth that was used to wipe Timmy off (bad girl, naughty, naughty!). Previously she was eating Doritos and had her head stuck in the bag. Oops, I didn't take it away fast enough, there is now a hole in the cloth.

It's nice that it's getting colder; I like summer, but when it gets too hot to move I start dreaming of snow. Besides when its cold its not muggy and its not a chore to breath. The perfect temperature is when everyone else is wearing a jacket/coat but too you it's not that cold.

Puppy just relieved herself on the floor and made everybody fear that germs were now invading our home and we are all gonna die soon. Well I might be egzagerating, (yeah, I know thats spelled wrong but I have know clue how to spell it) but not much. I guess I'll have to take her outside now.

There is no title

After lunch today Elijah, Josiah and I plucked and cleaned six ducks. Well, actually it was one mallard, two merganser, and four wood ducks, I think. It was a bloody, squishy and smelly job. My fingers (my whole hand) got so slimy with blood it was hard to cut. The boys wanted me to take pictures but I declined. I didn't want to go through all the trouble just for some ugly birds.

There is a website called godtube that started up a while ago. It's supposed to be like youtube but christian related and no offensive videos. In the newspaper yesterday it was said that Baby got book was one of the most popular videos. Hmmm, I don't see how that video is christian since I know where they got the idea for it, and the original song is not to nice. Besides that, it's like rap and I hate rap.

Since this is Sunday, the Lords day, I think I'll copy and post a song.

Candy


This is what I do when I'm waiting to use the computer, I take pictures 'till the batteries die on the camera. The first is just nonsense and the second is supposed to show how orange and light blue contrast. BY the way, how do you like my shoes? They are not like tiny tim's shoes; they were the pair right next to them. I like dark shoes because they don't show dirt as fast as light colored ones.

People are playing Monopoly right now. For some reason I don't like that game, its too slow and everybody talks and talks and nothing gets done and the game drags on and on.

So yesterday night went well. I can hardly believe this myself, but I played Teenage mutant turtles on Ethan's game boy. We had Milano's pizza for supper and I had English breakfast tea with four spoonfuls of sugar. later I had chocolate milk. Then I had some candy. For breakfast I had chocolate chip waffles (with Aunt Jemima) milk and Ethan gave me some more candy. Elijah was mesmerized by Bugs Bunny and the Tweety show, it was funny to watch him stare at the TV with his mouth open and watch it.

I can't think of much to write. Who wouldn't mind if I deleted the songspot? I kinda got tired of it.

By the way, we get an extra hour tomorrow!

Its really funny when I am using the computer (at my house) at the same time Joseph is at his house. I am so clogged today and the smallest thing makes me laugh. As soon as Chelsea got home she gave me potato chips and candy and now I'm kinda wired. I am sleeping over at her house tonight and so is Elijah, so we will see how much we sleep tonight.

Should Christians adopt such practices?

Can we borrow pagan customs and superstitions of ancient peoples and "Christianize" them?

As believers, we are called to "Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil. [1 Thesalonians 5:21-22] Who can deny that virtually all of the symbols of Halloween are evil? Witches, monsters, ogres, vampires, ghosts, ghouls, goblins, devils and demons all portray evil. Christians are to "... have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." [Ephesians 5:11]

Is Halloween just another innocent holiday that doesn't harm anyone? Is it really just childish fun? Vandalism and wanton disregard for the property of others is common on Halloween night. Even normally well-behaved children are driven by unseen forces to destructive behavior. Police officials everywhere report a great increase in such activities on Halloween. Worse yet are the horrifying accounts of poisoned candy and fruits booby-trapped with razor blades and needles. Such threats are so real that many hospitals offer free X-rays of Halloween treats in order to prevent children from being harmed. Who but Satan could inspire such monstrous actions?

Should the church be compromised by accommodating itself to the culture?

"Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." [Romans 12:2]

"For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial?" [2 Corinthians 6:14, 15]

When America and the world celebrates the Festival of Samhain and the powers of darkness by masquerading as evil creatures or decorating our homes, schools, businesses and churches with occult symbols, Satanic power is glorified.

The sort of practices celebrated on Halloween are what defiled the ancient nations [see Leviticus 18:24-30]. The Israelites were warned against such practices when they entered the Promised Land, "When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations." [Deuteronomy 18:9]

Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God. The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so. [Deuteronomy 18:10-14]

As an alternative to the celebration of evil and death, Christians should rather do what Christians are supposed to do every day and that is shine the light of Jesus Christ.A day that emphasizes the light of Christ instead of the darkness of evil.

While you may have participated "all in fun," be assured, Halloween is serious business for Satanists and witches. Those who oppose Christ are known to organize on Halloween to observe satanic rituals, to cast spells, to oppose churches and families, to perform sacrilegious acts, and to even offer blood sacrifices to Satan. While some may say, "But we only do this in fun...we don't practice witchcraft," those things that represent Satan and his domain cannot be handled or emulated "for fun". Such participation places you in enemy and forbidden territory and that is dangerous ground.

Tom Sanguinet, former high priest in the Celtic tradition of Wicca (witchcraft) said "The modern holiday we call Halloween has its origins in the full moon closest to November 1, the witches’ New Year. As evil prevails, Americans have embraced an evil day of Satan, with the pranks of 'would be' hoodlums, combined with 'demon faces' on pumpkins, clothing of 'death' being worn, and calling it fun. When Christians participate in Halloween, it sends a message to children that witchcraft, demonism, Satanism, and the occult are something fun, entertaining and harmless.

Witchcraft Many years ago, C.S. Lewis wrote that one of Satan's most deceptive tactics is to convince people that he doesn't exist. Apparently he has done a good job in his deception. Sadly, many people think of the devil as no more than a symbol of evil: like Santa Claus, he is just a fictional symbol. Many people today also do not think of witches as real people who practice magic, but simply as imaginary figures who represent the supernatural world and everything that is 'spooky.'

Recognizing this pagan holiday gives the false impression that what is actually lethal is innocuous. Children develop a fascination with the supernatural which leads them later into more sinister occult practices. It's the spiritual equivalent of painting a loaded gun to look like a toy and giving it to child to play with.

It is the kind of celebration that encourages kids like the 16-year-old in Pearl, Mississippi who stabbed his mother to death in her sleep and then opened fire at his high school, killing two students and wounding seven. Authorities found this student along with at least six others involved in a small, avowedly satanic clique that calls itself "Kroth."

How some people can defend this kind of activity as just another innocent holiday that doesn't harm anyone is beyond me.

Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. (John 3:19-20)

Acceptance of the Supernatural

Central to Satan's goals is the widespread acceptance of the supernatural, including the occult, on the part of North Americans, accompanied by a great revival of spiritism all over the world.

Over the last 30 or so years, the occult has moved into the mainstream of America - in television, movies, magazines, business, and various aspects of daily life. Movies, books, magazines and encyclopedias of the supernatural have abounded. Turn on your TV and hear from the ever-present "Psychic Friends" hotline, or see lead characters in TV shows meet their "spirit guide." Entire bookstores devoted to the occult have become common. Universities regularly offer courses on witchcraft and magic - usually the so-called "white" variety. Myriads of mystical Eastern religions, bizarre and often demonic, have invaded North America and found in most cases an amazing responsiveness.

Indeed, Halloween has taken root in America. Americans spend $21 million on Halloween candies yearly second only to Christmas in total sales. Halloween is the Number 1 season for selling humorous greeting cards. In North America, some 25 million cards are sold annually. (Peter Smith, "By the Numbers," The Toronto Star, 2002-OCT-27.) Halloween is the third-largest party occasion next to Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Increasingly the curriculum in many public schools is becoming a primer in occultism.
Impressions, a curriculum used in many school districts instructs teachers and students in how to cast spells. One teacher's manual reads, "Tell the children that a magician has cast a spell on some children. Have them work in pairs to write the magic spell the magician used. Have each pair write another spell to reverse the first spell. Have them chant their spells."

About 16,000 school districts use the Pumsey the Dragon curriculum, by Jill Anderson. Many of the relaxation techniques used are identical to those used in hypnosis. Another curriculum called Duso the Dolphin employs relaxation techniques and sends hypnotized youngsters off on guided fantasies to a place called Aquatron.

Satanism has become a phenomena that crosses the city limit into the rural areas of our nation. It is reported there are some 6000 witches, and approximately 10 million people are involved in the occult. However, it is very difficult to establish how many actually participate. These individuals are involved in a wide variety of activities from simply casting spells to human sacrifice. The news wires carry story after story about young children being kidnapped, only to be found later as victims of some bizarre ritualistic crime.


As satantic involvement among our youth increases, we begin to see the primary goal of such activity. According to Scripture (2 Cor. 4:4; Rev. 12:9), Satan's goal is to deceive man by blinding him to the truth of the gospel and to receive worship for himself (Matt. 4:9; Isa. 14:12-14).

It has become clear that the primary goal is to alter an individual's values and turn him against himself, his beliefs, family, God and society.

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." (1 Peter 5:8)

Young satanists believe the strong will rule with Satan. Once an individual becomes involved, they often make a pact with Satan. They commit themselves to a future date when they will take their own lives by suicide. They believe if they submit themselves to Satan in death, they will come back in another life as a stronger being and rule with him forever. According to recent statistics, fourteen young people a day take their own lives.

Recently, a California skateboard manufacturer used a package enclosure similar in appearance to a gospel tract to encourage purchasers to sell their souls to the devil. The brochure titled, "Let's Make a Deal" has a smiley-faced devil who explains to Flame Boy what happened in heaven after he was banished: "First off, they set up a bunch of dumb rules, and then they imposed a really strict dress code. I'l wager that people must be quite bored up there, but hey, that's what they get for being good." He contrasts this with, "Flame Boy, even a dimwit like you can see that hell is by far the best place to retire. Just look at all the fun to be had." Children are asked to sign and return a contract, by which they give possession of their souls to the devil for eternity.

What's wrong with Halloween?

It does not have even one single redeeming virtue. It is custom born out of pagan superstition. It is a demon-inspired, devil-glorifying, occult festival. It is an evening holy unto evil, death, and divination. The Scriptures tells us to "Abstain from all appearance of evil." [1Thess. 5:22]

Wake up Christian! This is the night of evil and those who love the Lord Jesus Christ should have nothing to do with it.

We are all accountable for our choices and decisions. Ignorance is no excuse. The choice is up to you. Have you been involved in this satanic holiday? Mars bar and potato chips

I'm sorta bored so I am posting twice. I feel like somebody hit my head with a baseball bat and is continually shining a flashlight into my eyes. Plus my nose is quite stuffed and I'm coughing. I could use some potato chips and a Mars bar with peanuts right now. Speaking of candy, Chelsea was hyper today but she says thats how she normally is. Which is true, she always is hyper just today she was more hyper. Chelsea says she got about a pillowcase and a half of candy. WOW. I don't get that much in an entire year! I made blueberry/walnut pancakes today for supper. I cracked and picked out the walnuts and got the blueberries out of the freezer. Then I rewrote a recipe so that it would feed my family. Then I ground some wheat since we were out of flour. As I got the bucket to put the flour in down, I knocked over the container of soybeans. I watched them spill over the floor and marveled at how much dust was in them then finished grinding wheat. Timmy had just gotten up from his nap and declared he would help pick up the soybeans, which meant, I later found out, that he would grab a handful of beans and carry them into his room, then drop them.

Right now John is walking on the table while Lizzy and Abby are trying to make button/bead dolls. Timmy, who happens to be wearing only a diaper (his sleeper is around his ankles 'cause John pulled it down) has a small dowel rod that he is hitting himself with as he gleefully climbs on the table. Ben is pouring glue on the table for no reason and smearing it around with his finger. John now has a flyswatter and is hitting all the "flies", meaning his brothers. Now Lizzy, following Ben's example, is pouring glue on the table. John and Timmy are rooting through the fridge, while Abby is yelling at Lizzy to stop wasting the glue.

The kitten seems to be not so jumpy now. Earlier I was vacuuming up dirt and cat litter in my room while Gwandle watched. The noise seemed to have bothered her for a bit because for a while she was very jumpy and when I moved my foot the teeniest bit she jumped. It was rather funny actually. Now Elijah is putting Timmy's sleeper on backwards because he (Timmy) keeps taking it off. John is folding Nate's clothes because he knocked them over, on purpose.

We may bew watching a DVD about 1812 so I'd better get off the computer. Not that I'm actually on it, well you know what I mean.

Trick-or-Treat?

Some trace the origins of present day "trick-or-treat" to Samhain, which was the supreme night of demonic jubilation. Spirits of the dead would rise out of their graves and wander the countryside, trying to return to the homes where they formerly lived. Frightened villagers tried to appease these wandering spirits by offering them gifts of fruit and nuts. They began the tradition of placing plates of the finest food and bits of treats that the household had to offer on their doorsteps, as gifts, to appease the hunger of the ghostly wanderers. If not placated, villagers feared that the spirits would kill their flocks or destroy their property.

The problem was... if the souls of dead loved ones could return that night, so could anything else,human or not, nice or not-so-nice. The only thing the superstitious people knew to do to protect themselves on such an occasion was to masquerade as one of the demonic hoard, and hopefully blend in unnoticed among them. Wearing masks and other disguises and blackening the face with soot were originally ways of hiding oneself from the spirits of the dead who might be roaming around. This is the origin of Halloween masquerading as devils, imps, ogres, and other demonic creatures.

Others trace "trick-or-treat" to a European custom called "souling". Beggars would go from village to village begging for "soul cakes" made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers could guarantee a soul's passage to heaven.

In many parts of Britain and Ireland this night used to be known as 'Mischief Night', which meant that people were free to go around the village playing pranks and getting up to any kind of mischief without fear of being punished. Many of the different customs were taken to the United States by Irish and Scottish immigrants in the nineteenth century, and they developed into 'trick or treat'.


Halloween Comes to America

Traditional Halloween symbols (witches, black cats, pumpkins, candles, masks, parties and pranks) appeared in the U.S. during the late 1800's. In 1848, millions of Irish emigrants poured into America as a result of the potato famine. With this sudden influx of people, the holiday of Druidism found its new home on alien shores. "Proudly Celtic, they called Halloween Oidche Shamhna (`Night of Samhain'), as their ancestors had, and kept the traditional observances" [Common Boundary, Sep./Oct. 1993, p. 31].

The Jack-o-lantern is the festival light for Halloween and is the ancient symbol of a damned soul. Originally the Irish would carve out turnips or beets as lanterns as representations of the souls of the dead or goblins freed from the dead.

When the Irish emigrated to America they could not find many turnips to carve into Jack O'Lanterns but they did find an abundance of pumpkins. Pumpkins seemed to be a suitable substitute for the turnips and pumpkins have been an essential part of Halloween celebrations ever since.

Jack-o-lantern Pumpkins were cut with faces representing demons and was originally intended to frighten away evil spirits. It was said that if a demon or such were to encounter something as fiendish looking as themselves that they'd run away in terror,thus sparing the houses dwellers from the ravages of dark entities. They would have been carried around the village boundaries or left outside the home to burn through the night.

Bats, owls and other nocturanal animals, also popular symbols of Halloween, were originally feared because people believed that these creatures could communicate with the spirits of the dead.

Black cats have religious origins as well. Black cats were considered to be reincarnated beings with the ability to divine the future. During the Middle Ages it was believed that witches could turn themselves into black cats. Thus when such a cat was seen, it was considered to be a witch in disguise.

Witches and witchcraft are dominant themes of the holiday. Witches generally believe themselves to be followers of an ancient religion, which goes back far beyond Christianity, and which is properly called 'wicca'. Witches are really just one side of a modern revival of paganism - the following of pre-Christian nature religions, the attempt to return to worshipping ancient Norse, Greek or Celtic gods and goddesses.

To witches, Halloween is a festival of the dead, and represents the "end and the beginning of the witches year. It marks the beginning of the death and destruction associated with winter. At this time the power of the underworld is unleashed, and spirits are supposedly freed to roam about the earth; it is considered the best time to contact spirits" (Halloween and Satanism, P. Phillips and J.H. Robie, 1987, p. 146).

The apostle Paul said Witchcraft is one of the acts of the sinful nature and those who practice it will not inherit the kingdom of God (Galatians 5:16-21; see also Revelation 22:15).

Divination

The various activities traditional to Halloween are mostly associated with the idea of obtaining good fortune and foretelling the future. Samhain was a time when it was customary for the pagans to use the occult practice of divination to determine the weather for the coming year, the crop expectations, and even who in the community would marry whom and in what order.

* The idea behind ducking, dooking or bobbing for apples seems to have been that snatching a bite from the apple enables the person to grasp good fortune. Unmarried people would attempt to take a bite out of an apple bobbing in a pail of water, or suspended on a string. The first person to do so was believed to be the next to marry.
* Samhain is a time for getting rid of weakness, as pagans once slaughtered weak animals which were unlikely to survive the winter. A common ritual calls for writing down weaknesses on a piece of paper or parchment, and tossing it into the fire.
* There used to be a custom of placing a stone in the hot ashes of the bonfire. If in the morning a person found that the stone had been removed or had cracked, it was a sign of bad fortune. Nuts have been used for divination: whether they burned quietly or exploded indicated good or bad luck.
* Peeling an apple and throwing the peel over one's shoulder was supposed to reveal the initial of one's future spouse.
* One way of looking for omens of death was for people to visit churchyards, because the spirits of those who were going to die during the coming year were thought to walk around the churchyard during this night.
